Mobile Phase Filtration

Econoclear Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane filters are ideally suited for High Performance Liquid Chromatography or HPLC mobile phase filtration as they exhibit very low extractables as detected by UV absorption. In addition, they offer excellent flow rates and have good chemical compatibility with solvents that are commonly used. In reverse phase chromatography, such as acetonitrile and methanol, and for normal phase chromatography, non polar solvents such as hexane, heptane, iso-octane and slightly more polar solvents such as isopropano are fully compatible. (We supply PTFE membranes which can be used with concentrated ethyl-acetate, chloroform and THF if required, but low concentration mixtures can sometimes be filtered with PES, though prior testing is recommended.)
Econoclear Polyethersulfone (PES) membrane filters also work well in Ion Chromatography or IC mobile phase filtration as the inorganic extractable levels are normally >10 ppb by conductivity detection.

The Polyethersulfone Membrane

microscopeThe Econoclear PES membrane consists of high molecular weight Polyethersulfone polymer. This is manufactured in Europe using a state-of-the-art casting process, which produces a highly porous membrane (porosity between 70 and 80%). This highly porous structure gives the membrane extremely good flow rates, higher than any other membrane types at the same pore size. This tightly controlled process also produces a 5 layer graded density asymmetric membrane. This ingenious feature presents a more open structure (depth pre-filtration layer) on the upstream side resulting in excellent dirt holding capacity. On the downstream side, in turn, the tighter, very precisely controlled layer defines the particle retention. The pore size is strictly batch tested using bubble point and bacteria retention testing such as > 7 log reduction of Serratia marcescens for the 0.45 micron membrane.
The PES membrane also displays excellent high tensile strength and burst pressure as well as low static and non-brittle properties. This makes for user-friendly handling of the membrane, particularly when compared with other material types. The intrinsic hydrophilicity makes the membrane ideally suited to aqueous and polar solutions without the need for wetting agents, as well as filtering non polar solutions with ease. The membrane is also heat stable up to 180° C and withstands a very wide
PH range (1 to 13). The original material is manufactured under the EN ISO 9001 and EN ISO 14001 quality systems, which ensure precise batch-to-batch consistency, offering a reliable membrane you can depend on for your laboratory requirements.
